Spend Time With People Who Get You

I almost wrote spend time with friends. However, not all your friends get you. Not all of them will make 5 hours disappear while just chatting away.

Some friends can do this and some won’t. Sometimes it depends on the topic and sometimes it depends on the situation. Although some friends can just riff forever and you’ll have a fun and enjoyable time together.

Make particular note of these friends so you have a shortlist for when you can or want to riff.

Take Care Of Your Things

It is amazing how long things can last if you simply pay a little attention to them and address any little matters before they get unmanageable.

One of my favourite sayings is, “A stitch in time, saves nine.” It is true for almost everything.

The UK requires cars to get an MOT every year to check the car is still functioning properly. While an annual cost, it does force us to keep paying attention to the car.

Do this quick check for other things in your life including your various relationships. It could be with your parents, children, spouse, friends, co-workers.

Review some actual questions together once a year. Don’t get by with the basic, “You good?”

Effort now nearly always pays off double later.

Happiness Is In Your Future

While you can have fondness looking back on old memories, you can’t impact the past. You can change how you remember it but you can’t change what actually happened.

The present is something you can alter. You can make things how you want. In the future, you can aim at what you want. You can plan and prepare the future. This mind work can help you be your happiest. Your expectations, and ability to direct and alter, help to give you a sense of control and contentment.

Enjoy building an amazing future in your mind. With a little effort, those plans will be created in your present and provide you with grand memories in your past.

Go build an amazing future.

Who Are You Thinking About?

There is often someone on our mind at any given time. This could be a special someone, an ex, your spouse, your kid or parent or an old friend.

There are dozens of reasons why they could be on your mind as well. Some examples are that you’ve not spoken for awhile, something reminded you of them, there is a longing for them or they’ve done something special.

Reflect on this today. Catch yourself and notice when you’re thinking of someone else and why. There could be a pattern developing…

Reflect

Take time to reflect on conversations and situations. Really explore your participation and also other people’s input. Try to see how their perspective may have differed from yours.

There is a lot you can learn from a post-mortem. You won’t learn everything, but you can learn a significant amount which may change your feelings toward the person or the situation.

Clean Slate

Every 10 years, consider a one year sabbatical and/or your life with a clean slate.

This allows you to start fresh with no ties to the past. And the one year sabbatical can help you begin again.

Push Your Body

Your body is an incredible machine. Use it, or you will lose it. It’s very important to build its strength and mobility while you are younger and while you can. Or you will lose that option.

If you don’t build it while you can, you will find that you no longer are able to do the things you would like to do. Then it becomes much harder to get it back to the shape you were in or would like it to be in.

So do yourself a big favour, and stay disciplined with keeping your body in shape and active, pushing it to its limits at times. If you don’t consistently push your limits, your limits will become less and less.

Let Things Play

Often we try to rush things faster than we should. If you are running late, you may try to drive faster to make up the time to your next appointment. Often that works, but sometimes you get a speeding ticket or have a minor accident.

You can’t rush cooking something. You wouldn’t be advised to cook chicken for half the time the packaging says. You may end up feeling unwell.

Sometimes we need to just let things play out. You may want to hurry it along, especially if waiting or the topic makes you uncomfortable. But it can be good to wait and see where things go naturally. You can develop patience, learn about human nature and hone your listening and observation skills as things play out.

The world has a rhythm. Let things play.
