Energy Over Time

People talk about making time, having time, scheduling, etc. But the one thing that may trump time is energy. You may have the energy but not the time, which is one thing. Though, even if you book the time, you may not be able to use it effectively if you don’t have enough energy.

As we age from 20 to 90, each day will have 24 hours and each year 365/6 days. However, most people do not have the energy at 55 that they had at 25. Certainly most won’t have the energy at 80 that they had at 30.

So use your young energy wisely. Do things you want early on in life. Don’t store up high energy activities until later in your years. You may have the time and the money but not the energy. You’ve been warned.

Shorthand Communication Is Rarely Good

“What does Iran want” is a headline in one of the UK’s top newspapers. The shorthand generalisation isn’t helpful but it’s shorter and catchier than, “What does Iran’s current leader want?”

When we say Iran we aren’t referring to all 88 million people. I imagine, like anywhere, there is a variety of viewpoints on most things. The leader might want something different to his leadership team, pro western citizens, secular or Sunni followers and from those wanting to conquer than go in peace.

So be careful when you hear shorthand or generalisations and think what it might really be like if you dig into the details.

Consider Your Options

Look at where you want to go. Think about the options to get there. Then read an article, watch a YouTube video, listen to a podcast and ask a few people for other options. Then calmly consider your options.

At that point you can make your informed decision.

How Does It End?

I assume most people want to know how things end. Some people read the last chapter first just to get it over with. Some people plan well, including the end.

The end of a holiday is often a bit anti climatic for me as you often have to find your things and pack your bag, get to the airport and/or drive home. Life can be a bit like that too. The first and last 10% is often not hugely memorable. The 80% in the middle, though… there’s the beef!

So live it up and enjoy but also pack the day before so you’re not stuck doing that in those precious final moments that you’re savouring and wish never had to end.

Think And Smile

Think of a great photo of, or moment with, your Mom. Think and smile. Or maybe it is regarding your Dad. It could be with other family members or friends or an event you attended.

Regardless of what it is, find some happy memories and make your mouth, eyes and face smile with the memory. I’m not sure people do this enough. It’s so simple and easy and feels good too. Do it daily. Do it twice a day even.

This is also a great way to get fantastic photos of you. If there is a camera in your midst and someone wants your photo, look straight at it, think of that happy moment and smile. You’ll never have a bad picture of you again.

Start Decent

It’s a new year with new goals and lots of enthusiasm to get going strong to start the year. But maybe strong is too ambitious. Perhaps starting decent is the better angle.

If you start as you mean to go on, will you be able to keep up the strong intensity with consistent effort by week 7, 14 and 26? Or are you setting yourself up to fail?

What are you really looking forward to in January 2024? What makes you excited each day just thinking about it?

If you haven’t got something, imagine something and focus on that. Get some excitement in your day. You’ll feel better and your life will be richer. It can be simple like seeing someone come back home from a trip or eating your favourite food at a friends house. Enjoy the simple and low cost things as there are so many of them.

Reflect Back on Your Year

This is a good time to write down as many great things about this past year that you can remember. Hopefully this list will bring fun memories and remind you of the good times and successes you had that may be long forgotten.

Remember, by doing this, it is social proof to yourself about how much you’ve done, overcome and won in just the last 12 months. And hopefully it will inspire you for more in 2024. Get writing!

Don’t Go Too Soft On Holiday

It’s a great feeling to have no schedule, commitments or to do’s. One could get used to that fairly quickly. Three or four days of that lifestyle and it could get comfortable and become the norm. Then it could be quite difficult to break out of and you could get stuck in an unproductive loop.

Ways to combat this are to keep holidays short, have some structured days (with activities, events, etc.) or have some inspiring early goals to achieve in the first week you are back.
