In Pursuit Of Feeling Good

This can be a prescription for disaster in life. While feeling good is wonderful, the constant pursuit of that feeling can lead to poor choices, pain, misery and regret.

Often there is a choice between something that feels good and something less enjoyable. For example, watching your favourite tv show rather than doing an hour of homework. Or perhaps you’d rather pay for a holiday rather than research and invest your funds into a sensible venture.

Making the feel good choice once in a while will usually work out fine. However, developing a habit of avoiding harder work in pursuit of feeling good can leave your life in tatters after several years.

Your life can slide into a series of pointless undertakings, unfortunate failures and directionless drifting with no joy of accomplishment or giving. You may find you are lacking in life’s key elements such as health, relationships, finances and happiness.

You are in control of this. Pursue more than just feeling good and with a 20 year time horizon. Your future self will thank you.

Feeling A Little Behind

It’s ok to be behind schedule sometimes. There are many different reasons why that can happen. Occasionally we take on too much. Other times events conspire against us. Still other situations involve more learning than expected, which takes time.

I’m feeling about a month behind on my book launch and a few other things. Despite many very long days, I’m still adding more to the list each day than I remove. But at least I’m moving forward in many fronts.

I know it’s a blip. Sometimes unique events warrant exceptional effort. This is one of those times for me. We all have these at some point. The week before going on holiday is a great example.

So, if I’ve not replied or I’ve gone quiet, it’s just a matter of a crazy number of things to get done and not enough me’s or hours in a day to address all of them satisfactorily.

I’ll keep aiming to get on top of things into February. When you’re feeling a little behind, keep pressing forward but give yourself some slack. Rest. Just don’t stop.

Feeling Unstoppable

When was the last time you felt unstoppable? That feeling of everything going well with lots of energy and confidence. Can you recreate it?

You can recreate it but it may take some training. You’ll need to notice what makes you feel that way. Usually celebrating some wins can really help. So celebrate small ones and large ones. Wins can add up if you appreciate them.

A solid mindset can also help. Keeping things positive is a good start. Feeling you are on the right track even if you aren’t at the moment and there is some evidence of that. Believing that you’ll get to your destination is reassuring and empowering.

Feeling unstoppable is a good prerequisite to being unstoppable. So practice in your mind and celebrate every win.

Feeling Grown Up

At what point do people feel like an adult? There are many times that people say they feel 18, 23 or 28. Feeling grown up means different things to different people.

Some people feel grown up when they can drive a car on their own. Others are instilled with civic duty, so voting is their grown up moment. For others it could be travel overseas on their own, getting married, having kids, buying a property or having a senior role in a prestigious company.

There probably isn’t just one grown up moment for anyone. Different moments will elicit a range of feelings and emotions. Perhaps they build on each other until you feel you are doing grown up stuff all the time.

There can be a lot to unpack in just how people approach this term. Are you grown up because you are serious or take on a level of responsibility? Owning an impressive house can feel grown up to some. It may depend on what they say ‘grown ups’ do or what seemed to be expected for that group when they were young.

Being grown up may just be moments of taking particular responsibility for yourself, your future and others around you.

Feeling grown up can be a mental burden for some. Remember to let your hair down occasionally.
