Step 3: Write

Writing things down is so incredibly useful. Thinking can be quite broad and general. When you write things down you get clearer in your thoughts. In order to write something sensible, whether in bullet point or sentence form, you need to refine your thoughts a degree or two.

With these more clear thoughts written on paper or in a device, you better organise and clarify your thoughts. Then you have something which helps you be more specific in your present and future.

You will also have something to come back to so that you can review it and track your progress against it. This helps you understand where you are and how well you are moving toward the outcome you desire.

The pen is mightier than the sword. Written contracts are more binding, clear and useful than verbal ones. The clarity of thought and written affirmations can change your life forever.

Write things down: To do lists, calendar items, plans, dreams and ideas. It will make a world of difference if you start and get better at it as you go.

”Step 3: Write“, paraphrases a portion of the third step in my recently released book, Achieve Anything – The 7 Simple Steps to Shift from Uncomfortable to Unstoppable. It is available on Amazon, and other online book retailers. It is an international bestseller and reached #1 in self-help. Currently the ebook is 95% off, Hardcover 39% off, paperback is regular price and the Audible version, which is read by me, can be had for free if opening an Audible account or use one of your several credits. Enjoy your success!

Plan So You Don’t Use Up Your Luck

Not planning is easier in the moment. You have more fun time, free time, or stress free time. But, sometimes things then happen that you would have foreseen with a plan. So now you hope and pray you get a little unexpected intervention or luck.

That’s one way to live your life. It’s a little more dramatic, exciting and stressful. And if you enjoy stress and uncertainty, maybe that’s the way to go.

However, if calm, relaxed and controlled is what you would like more of, then get planning. It will force you to THINK about the whole picture a bit more. Then you can assess what you will need to OVERCOME and how you might be able to do that.

Then take these thoughts and quickly WRITE them out. Writing brings clarity to your thoughts and allows you to REVIEW your thoughts in note format. Then you can challenge what you wrote and even confirm certain assumptions or guesses.

Now you have the ingredients for a PLAN. Take those written notes from your initials thoughts and challenges to overcome and organise them a little better on a new page. Chronological order is good. Timeframes, cashflows and the effort required will become much clearer.

You will now need less luck and divine intervention. There will be less stress because you have a roadmap. You know where you’ll eat, get petrol and arrive. You can enjoy the journey much more rather than feel anxious throughout.

Then you can use your good luck when you really need it. Not simply because you didn’t want to put the effort into a plan.

Write Your Ideas Down

It’s one thing to think about things. It’s another level to be writing down your thoughts. It is too easy to forget key pieces of information by the next day or a week later.

Writing things down helps you to clarify our thoughts. It also reinforces your thoughts. And it gives you a record of your ideas to look back on.

Scribble down some notes, make some drawings or type things into Notes on your phone. Do whatever you need to do to capture the information you have thought about.

This is a great process to help move you from uncertainty, with ideas all floating in your head, towards developing a plan. Write your ideas down. You’ll be more contented and confident if you do. It’s one more step from Uncomfortable to Unstoppable.

For example, let’s say you want to rent out your house for two years so you can spend the next two years renting a beach side apartment in the Bahamas or Aruba. Write down the rental income, the costs of living in the Bahamas and all the other challenges you’ll need to overcome (parent care, kids, business, flights, food, guilt and time organising it). Get all your thoughts down in one spot to consider all the points. This will be great progress.

Write is step three in my upcoming book – Achieve Anything – The 7 Simple Steps to Shift from Uncomfortable to Unstoppable. A big part of shifting from where you are to where you want to be is turning your thoughts into tangible points.

You are either already uncomfortable with the way things are or it makes you uncomfortable thinking about writing everything down. You might feel exposed. You may realise the excuses you’ve been giving are flimsy and based primarily on fear or uncertainty. Write your ideas down. Get greater clarity. Organise your thoughts. Take action.

Your Bucket List

For some, this is a great time to take stock and think through what they truly want to do in this life. For others, it may have become so crazy busy that they don’t have a moment to pause and think about anything other than the next government announcement and its implications.

Without all the usual kids activities and appointments to arrange and get to, some people may have a few extra minutes (hours) in their day. Or maybe you no longer need to “get ready and commute”, so you may have a little more time now.

For those of you with a little extra time, this is a great opportunity to consider what kind of life you want to look back on when you are 85 years old. What do you want to remember when you are going through your photo albums or chatting to friends or younger relatives. Life flies by quickly, so don’t delay.

Block out an hour in your calendar on a day this week. Be specific with exactly what hour and day it is. It is an appointment with yourself. Then, when that time comes, do nothing else other than reflect and write out a list of things you would love to do, be or have in your life, between now and 85 (125 if you’re already well up there).

Just write all the things that come to mind. Ideally you will do an electronic list which you can save and sort out later on. But it could also be written on a sheet of paper or in a journal. You can always take a photo of it and file it on a device for easy finding later on.

The list does not have to be realistic, believable, conventional, exciting or anything really. What it should be though is a specific list of things on your mind and in your imagination. It could be things like: Spending two weeks on a golden sand beach in the Caribbean, helping your grandson learn French, walking on Mars, writing a funny novel, buying some art from a local artist, becoming a pilot, writing a letter to a loved one, collecting rare stamps or watching The Bucket List (enjoyable movie to get your thoughts flowing – good for most kids too).

This list-writing can be a challenge. Some find this exercise easy and some difficult. Either way, I suggest you do it. Now is a good time. It will give you a focus on things you are looking forward to, once we get life back to something approaching normal. It also helps you clarify what is important. Have fun with it.
