Always Make Peace Before Bed

Don’t go to bed angry. It will eat at you. You’re likely to get a bad night’s sleep. And what if by some weird quirk you never wake up? The other person’s last memory of you will be of an angry person. That might suit your angry feelings in this moment, but is it really how you want anyone to remember you?

As hard as it may be to swallow your pride, apologise and say a few kind words, it’s usually the better thing to do. It takes a lot of character and strength to be the first to start healing the wounds.

Life is short, so holding onto anger and resentment is not a great strategy. You’ll miss the joy and peace that could be yours. You could also help others find those faster.

Always make peace before bed. Your soul will thank you.

It Could Be Worse

Yes, it’s not how you want things to be. However, it could be worse. Look at others around the world or even around your neighbourhood. There are probably several people that are having challenges in their life that you wouldn’t want. Many you wouldn’t even know about.

Just remember, things can get better with time and some effort. Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain. (As GnR would put it).

I’m not saying your situation is easy or that I know anything about it. I am saying though that you should look at the positives, regardless of how insignificant they may seem. From that will grow strength and greatness. In time, wounds heal, thoughts improve, lives change.

What you think is or isn’t manageable or good, is simple a thought or perception. Perceive things differently. Flip those thoughts on their head. See the upside and be grateful for it.

It could be worse. Focus on those slivers of good.

Follow Positive Traditions

Cultures have traditions. Follow them if they are beneficial. There is something simple and calming about traditions.

Try to understand why the creator of the tradition created it. Don’t just assume why they did it through your biased lense.

Follow positive traditions. They’re a great part of life.

Stay On Top Of Things

Keep your calendar up to date. When you get a new item with a date or time, put it in there. Do it even if you have to put TBC. Write your thoughts and to-dos down too. Think in terms of rolling weeks. Be mindful of the week ahead. Also be mindful of two, three and four weeks ahead.

Keep your files up to date. Know where things are. Tidy up your drawers and eliminate all unnecessary or unknown items. Keep lean. Give things a home in your house and make sure you put things back straight away. There’s not enough extra time in life to spend hours looking for things.

Stay on top of things. You’ll be happier for it. And there will be more calm and confidence in your future.

You Lack Discipline Not Motivation

If you are not achieving your goals, reread the title of this post six times. Motivation is a feeling and often it is fleeting. People might say that they feel motivated or didn’t feel motivated. Even those with a big Why to do something can feel unmotivated at times.

What you really need to build is some discipline in your life. This means that even when you lack motivation, don’t feel like it or want to take a break, your discipline will kick in and you’ll do it.

Few people would want to leave their comfy, warm, dry bed at 05:40am to go for a 10km run in the dark, cold and wet. If you leave the option to motivation, you might just give it a pass and go back to sleep. However, if you’ve developed discipline, that habit of doing things you’ve committed to will happen.

Discipline does not require ‘feeling like it’. Discipline means you push through despite not feeling like it.

Plan what you need to do and use your discipline to carry you through.

If you are not achieving, you lack discipline not motivation.

Who Sets Your Pace?

What tempo do you move at? Are you getting things done like a person possessed or are you chilling like there is all the time in the world?

Once again, this can be heavily influenced by the 5 people you spend the most time with. If you are working with people who are action takers and getting things done quickly, you’ll probably start doing the same. If you are surrounded by people who sit on the park bench watching the world go by, you’ll probably find yourself there ever more frequently.

And if you think you have no further capacity to do more, you may be wrong. Consider Roger Bannister who came fourth in the Olympics in 1952 for the 1500 meters. Then, using top pacers in 1954, he became the first person to break the 4 minute mile at 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds.

Who sets your pace?
