Naming Your Child

Why did you choose the name you did for your child? Since you didn’t choose all the other names available, are you a bad person?

Humans select for preference. That means the non-selected options could be viewed as non-selected, second place or rejected. Or the name chosen could be viewed as being preferential. What’s interesting is that people prefer names for a wide variety of reasons. The name could be selected because of a father, grandmother, favourite aunt, old friend, famous actor, old boyfriend, a movie character or an ice cream flavour, to name a few influences.

When only one option can go forward, out of two options, it would be easy and very simple to deduce that the second was rejected, which feels worse than non-selected.

Selection is tricky as it often depends on so many factors. Rarely is one factor the 100% reason for something.there are often several reasons for any decision, though lots of studies and discussions want to boil it down to one.

Seeing What You Want To See

Having verbal conversations can be tricky. Everyone sees, in their mind, what they want to see. Because the bias comes in and words spoken can be misinterpreted, misunderstood, summarised or even misused, it can work better if things are written down. A desire to find the truth of a specific reality, regardless of your personal position, will also help you ask good questions and make progress on the topic.

Could There Be Another Reason?

Often we react and don’t take the necessary time to stop, consider and respond. We can see something happen and immediately come up with our version of the story. This usually involves our own bias, what we’re thinking about in that moment, what we experienced at the time and a thought of fear or strength.

Many times things happen for a reason we could not even consider. Or it will be a mix of various reasons that an observer may have no knowledge about.

When you’re about to comment on something, check your bias, and consider alternative positions and events that could have swayed the situation. It’s not always as simple and straightforward as Iwe make it up to be in our head.

What Are Lies?

Remember, to lie you have to know the correct answer, believe it is correct and then say something else.

Just because someone has a different opinion to you, does not mean they are lying. They just see it differently.

Is Your Life Story Becoming A Warning Or An Inspiration?

If someone wrote your biography and turned it into a movie, would people watch with interest? Would it lift people up and inspire them to greatness? Or would it be a warning to others to avoid this route at all costs?

Now that you’re thinking about it, you could actually do something about it. If it looks like a positive role model story, well done, keep going! However, if it has flashing red lights and warning labels all over it, perhaps rethink the plan for the next five years and start turning things around.

Find Your Favourites

We are all searching for our favourite things. We try new foods to see if we can find our absolute favourite. We assess different political and philosophical ideas to find our favourite one.

We also look for our favourite person and people. We seem to be on a continuous, never-ending quest to find our favourites. When will we be satiated?

Six Centuries

When considering a concept, I like to reflect on the extremes or both ends of a continuum. I’ve previously written about looking back 200+ years to see the basics of life without the modern noise.

The other end of the continuum is the future. You could say to go a billion years into the future but it doesn’t feel relatable. Six centuries has a nice ring to it and I am sure it is sufficient for most concepts to get a full consideration.

Will the victims of today still be victims in 600 years? Will their offspring and lineage still be beating the same drum of oppression and historical misdeeds?

How many years of relatively exceptional comfort, affluence, societal support, systems, modern conveniences and neutral laws will be required before most or all people recognise that you get what you give?

Will the descendants of the people of today who claim life or society has singled them out and is holding them down, will they feel the same? Even after 12 generations?

What will it take for people to get over any family or historical, perceived or real slight/challenge/disaster and push forward with creating their own better life?

Complaining is easy. Taking hand outs is easy. They can also be understandable for short periods of time. But it should not be a lifestyle.

Put in some effort. Learn a new skill. Apply it. Make more money. Feel the pride of independence. Be the person whose grandchildren are proud of them. Do things that will make your lineage so glad you came before them.

If enough people stopped complaining and made a huge effort to change their own circumstances, there might not be any oppressed victims in 2623.
